Microlight community reaction to recent BBC film on 2011 Round Britian Rally

Yesterday the BBC showed a film, following a group of UK Microlighters on the 2011 Round Britain Rally, reading the BMAA forum there are many positive and negative comments: http://forums.bmaa.org/default.aspx?f=15&m=110671

Here’s an excerpt: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/16658211

Anyway here’s my say in the debate:

Interesting and surprising comments, here’s my thoughts:

I think if you are someone, who dreams of getting airborne this film will probably inspire you and help you realize that this form of aviation is attainable for the average person.
As for promoting the sport, the film probably put seeds in many a future pilots heads.

In my time involved in Microlighting there have always been a minority of individuals within the GA establishment for whom, no matter what you do, they will always look down their noses at Microlighting, these individuals are involved in aviation, not because of a love of flight, but to serve only their ego’s and who make narrow minded judgements on other areas of aviation that they do not even understand ! From my experience these individuals are best ignored and one must not waste energy trying to convince them otherwise.

But what you will find is those who are into aviation for the love of flying, are interested in us and have great respectand have great respect for any other form of aviation, whether it be seeing a poor kid with dreams of flight on a lawnmower powered hang glider or seeing a Vulcan flyby.

You talk to any of the pioneers of Microlighting in this country and you will quickly realize they were mostly all risk taking eccentrics, without whom we would probably either not be flying, or we would be flying around the Country at huge cost wearing ties in 1950′s Cessnas.

Always show good airmanship, stick to the rules and ignore those who would question our sport.

How excellent and refreshing it is to see pilots having a laugh, sleeping under wings and worrying about engine failures. Anyone remember those days?

Lets all have a bit more of that !!
